The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault of a student in Osun State after a video showing the incident went viral on social media.

The student, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was reportedly released following the intervention of the senior police officer, who also directed that the circumstances surrounding the incident be thoroughly investigated.

The development comes after footage circulated online showing the student allegedly being subjected to physical assault by police personnel, sparking widespread outrage and renewed concerns over police conduct and the treatment of young Nigerians.

The viral video triggered reactions from social media users, many of whom demanded accountability and called on the police authorities to ensure that officers involved in the incident were brought to justice.

Following the public outcry, the AIG reportedly intervened, ordering the student’s release and directing relevant authorities to establish what transpired.

The investigation is expected to determine the circumstances leading to the student’s arrest, the conduct of the officers involved and whether established policing procedures were violated.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for professionalism, respect for human rights and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
