Former Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has accused President Bola Tinubu of allegedly using the judiciary to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Frank made the allegation following a Federal High Court judgment that removed Senator David Mark’s leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raising fresh concerns over the party’s political future ahead of the next presidential election.
Reacting to the ruling, the former APC chieftain called on the United States Government and other members of the international community to intervene by urging the Nigerian government to uphold democratic principles, judicial independence and the constitutional rights of opposition parties.
Frank expressed concern that the court’s decision could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process, warning that the judiciary must remain independent and impartial, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
He described the judgment as a troubling development and cautioned against any attempt to use judicial institutions to frustrate political opponents.
Frank further urged the international community, particularly the United States, to closely monitor political developments in Nigeria and take an interest in safeguarding democratic institutions.
He warned that the alleged use of the judiciary against opposition parties could undermine public confidence in the country’s democratic system and trigger a serious political crisis if not properly addressed.
The development comes amid growing political tension as opposition parties prepare for the 2027 general elections, with questions surrounding party leadership, candidate selection and the role of the judiciary becoming increasingly prominent.
