President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of Peter Chukwuemeka Chijioke Onwubuariri, an Assistant Director of Media at the Presidential Villa.
Onwubuariri, a veteran journalist and public servant, died on Monday in Kano following a prolonged illness. He was 48.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the journalist’s death as a painful loss to the Presidency, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the media profession and the country.
Onwubuariri joined the Presidential Villa in 2014 after working as NAN’s North American correspondent. During his career at the Villa, he served under three successive administrations led by former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, as well as the current administration.
Before joining the Villa, he rose through the ranks at NAN and attained the position of Assistant Editor-in-Chief. He covered major national and international issues, including politics, foreign affairs, telecommunications and finance.
Tinubu praised Onwubuariri’s professionalism, dedication and calm disposition, noting that his years of service across different administrations reflected his competence and commitment to public duty.
The President extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and associates, while praying for strength for those affected by his passing.
He also acknowledged Onwubuariri’s contributions to journalism and national service, saying his legacy would be remembered by those who worked with him and by the wider media community.
