Applications are open for the 2027–2028 International Affairs Fellowship in Canada, a professional fellowship sponsored by Power Corporation of Canada and administered by the Council on Foreign Relations.
The programme is designed for mid-career professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of Canada and strengthen knowledge and cooperation between the United States and Canada.
Selected fellows will spend between six and 12 months working full-time at a Canadian host institution. Fellows may be placed in government, academia, civil society or other relevant organisations where they can engage directly with Canadian policymakers and institutions.
The fellowship is open to professionals from a range of backgrounds, including government, business, academia, journalism, non-governmental organisations and think tanks. Previous professional experience focused specifically on Canada is not required.
Fellowship Benefits
The fellowship provides a stipend of $110,000 for a 12-month period, with the amount prorated for shorter fellowship terms.
Fellows will also receive a modest travel allowance to support eligible travel connected with the programme.
The fellowship is a full-time, in-person opportunity. Participants are expected to spend substantial time at their host institution, normally working on-site at least four days each week.
The Council on Foreign Relations assists successful fellows in identifying suitable host institutions in Canada, although the final placement is determined by the host organisation.
Eligibility
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be mid-career professionals with a strong record of professional achievement.
Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career related to foreign policy and an interest in U.S.-Canada relations.
Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have a valid U.S. passport that remains valid beyond the fellowship period.
The programme typically awards only one or two fellowships each year, making it a highly competitive opportunity.
The 2027–2028 fellowship will provide selected professionals with an opportunity to spend an extended period in Canada, develop professional relationships and gain first-hand experience of Canadian institutions and policy-making.
