Karim Benzema’s hopes of making an emotional return to Olympique Lyon have been dashed despite the former France international reportedly being prepared to play for the club without a salary.
Lyon explored the possibility of bringing their former academy graduate back during the summer transfer window, with Benzema said to have been enthusiastic about spending another season at his boyhood club. However, his contractual obligations to Saudi football prevented the deal from progressing.
Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean confirmed that the club had made contact with Benzema through an intermediary.
According to Louis-Jean, the negotiations could not advance because of the striker’s existing contractual situation, despite Lyon’s need for a forward at the time.
Benzema’s departure from Al-Hilal has not completely severed his links with Saudi football. Although the Saudi club agreed to terminate his playing contract by mutual consent on August 31, the 38-year-old reportedly remains tied to the Saudi Pro League through a separate ambassadorial agreement that runs until 2030.
That arrangement became the major obstacle to a return to France. Reports indicate that Benzema’s representatives explored ways to make a Lyon comeback possible, but the obligations attached to his Saudi role made the move difficult to complete.
Benzema had been hoping to return to the club where he began his professional career. He scored 66 goals in 148 appearances for Lyon before joining Real Madrid in 2009, where he established himself as one of the greatest forwards of his generation.
His Madrid career brought five Champions League titles and numerous individual honours, including the 2022 Ballon d’Or. He later moved to Saudi Arabia, first joining Al-Ittihad before switching to Al-Hilal.
His Al-Hilal spell ended after just six months, with the club confirming the mutual termination of his contract. Benzema scored 10 goals in 16 appearances for the Riyadh side.
With a return to Lyon now off the table, Benzema’s next step remains uncertain. Reports have linked him with possible opportunities outside Saudi Arabia, while retirement has also emerged as a possibility if his contractual situation cannot be resolved.
For now, the prospect of the French star finishing his career where it all began appears to have been put on hold.
