The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned an alleged attack on its members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The party alleged that suspected political thugs invaded the gathering and opened fire on members who had assembled for a monthly ward meeting. According to the NDC, eight members sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.
The attack reportedly occurred on Saturday while party members were participating in a grassroots mobilisation and voter-sensitisation exercise.
The NDC identified the injured members as Onovo Donald Ekene, Ngene Godwin Madueke, Ogbodo Gloria, Onovo Victor, Maduabuchi Ugwu, Nnaemeka Nelson, Chinonso Nwagbara and Obinna Daniel Owo.
The party described the incident as an act of political thuggery and alleged that the attackers were sponsored by political interests opposed to the opposition party.
The NDC also claimed that chairs, canopies and other materials at the meeting venue were destroyed during the attack.
Reacting to the incident, the party called on the Enugu State Police Command, the Department of State Services and other security agencies to investigate the attack, identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The party insisted that Nigerians have a constitutional right to participate in political activities and attend peaceful gatherings without fear of violence or intimidation.
The NDC further warned that attacks on its members would not prevent it from mobilising supporters or participating in the 2027 general elections.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of political gatherings as political parties intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported attack and determine those responsible. As of the latest reports, the allegations by the NDC had not been independently established by the security agencies.
