The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) branch, has declared an indefinite strike following unresolved issues surrounding the payment of salaries and allowances to its members.
The decision was reached after the university management failed to address the union’s demands within a deadline issued earlier this month. According to the branch, the deadline expired at midnight on Tuesday, September 15, without a satisfactory resolution.
The union said some lecturers had received incomplete salaries for June, July and August 2026. It also raised concerns over unpaid responsibility allowances, including payments relating to lecturers in the School of Health Sciences.
ASUU-UNIPORT said it had previously met with the university administration on September 11, during which management reportedly promised to respond to the concerns before the deadline.
Following the failure to resolve the issues, the union held another emergency congress on Wednesday, September 16, where members approved the indefinite strike.
During the industrial action, lecturers are expected to suspend academic and official duties. This includes teaching, examinations, examination invigilation and participation in official meetings and assignments. The union has also activated a monitoring team to ensure compliance across the university’s campuses and centres.
The development comes amid wider concerns from ASUU over the implementation of outstanding salary and welfare agreements affecting university lecturers across Nigeria.
