Federal civil servants have renewed pressure on the Federal Government to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and pay outstanding promotion arrears owed to affected workers.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, Trade Union Side, raised the concerns in a fresh letter to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, urging him to intervene and resolve the outstanding issues.
The council acknowledged the recent payment of two months of outstanding wage awards, noting that the payments were made within the timeline agreed with the government.
However, it said the **40 per cent peculiar allowance linked to the ₦70,000 national minimum wage had yet to be implemented.
According to the workers, a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission provided for the allowance to take effect from May 1, 2026. The council therefore appealed to the Finance Minister to ensure that the circular is implemented without further administrative delays.
The union also called for the payment of outstanding promotion arrears owed to workers in Batch 7 and Batch 9, describing the payments as still being processed.
The council said the two issues remained major outstanding concerns for public servants and urged the government to address them promptly.
In its letter, the workers warned that continued delays were contributing to growing dissatisfaction among public servants and could lead to spontaneous reactions if the situation was not resolved.
The latest demand follows an August 5 meeting between the workers’ representatives and Oyedele, during which the Federal Government assured labour leaders that outstanding wage awards would be paid and promotion arrears processed.
The Federal Ministry of Finance had subsequently confirmed that the outstanding wage award payments were being addressed, while Batch 7 and Batch 9 promotion arrears were undergoing processing. The ministry also said discussions were continuing on the peculiar allowance.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council has now called for faster implementation of the outstanding workers’ entitlements, stressing that resolving the issues would help maintain confidence and industrial harmony within the Federal Public Service.
The council concluded its latest appeal with the warning that early action would help prevent further agitation over the unresolved payments.
