President Bola Tinubu has asked the House of Representatives to consider and pass the 2026 statutory budget proposal of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The President’s request was contained in a letter dated August 20, 2026, and addressed to the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.

Tinubu said the proposed budget was prepared by the Minister of Niger Delta Development in accordance with Section 121 of the Nigerian Constitution and forwarded to the House for legislative consideration.

According to the President, the spending plan was based on the NDDC’s projected revenue and expenditure and aligned with the Federal Government’s fiscal policies and development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The proposed budget places emphasis on several areas, including youth empowerment, electricity and power supply, education, industrial and enterprise development, healthcare, security and agriculture.

Tinubu said the priorities were designed to address longstanding development challenges in the Niger Delta while expanding economic opportunities for residents of the region.

He also noted that the proposal took into account the 2024–2026 Economic Recovery Growth Plan and key assumptions underpinning the Federal Government’s 2026 Appropriation Act.

The President urged lawmakers to give the proposal prompt consideration, saying timely approval would enable the commission to proceed with its planned programmes and projects.

The NDDC is responsible for implementing development projects and programmes across the Niger Delta, with interventions covering areas such as roads, education, healthcare, water supply, agriculture and skills development.

The commission’s 2026 priorities also include youth empowerment and enterprise development, against the backdrop of concerns over unemployment and access to sustainable livelihoods in the region.

The proposal will undergo legislative scrutiny, including consideration by relevant committees of the House, before the National Assembly takes further action on its passage.
