Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed the emotional struggles she sometimes faces behind closed doors, despite her reputation as one of Nigeria’s most successful entertainers.

Akindele made the disclosure during an interview with CNN journalist Larry Madowo, explaining that there are moments when life’s challenges become overwhelming and she retreats to her room to cry.

The filmmaker, widely celebrated for her work in the entertainment industry, admitted that she sometimes breaks down emotionally but eventually gathers the strength to face her challenges and carry on.

“I cry. I lock myself in the room, cry, break down, hit the bed. But I just pick up myself and come back to life,” she said.

Public Scrutiny Takes an Emotional Toll

Akindele also spoke about the pressure of living under public scrutiny, particularly when conversations about her marriages and relationship breakdowns become subjects of public debate.

She acknowledged that there are times when she questions her decisions and worries about how people might judge her.

The actress, however, said she has learnt over the years not to allow public opinion to define her life, stressing the importance of finding the courage to confront difficulties and move forward.

Her comments offer a glimpse into the personal challenges that can exist behind the success and public image of celebrities.

‘Learn to Love Yourself’

Beyond her career achievements, Akindele emphasised the need to prioritise personal well-being, self-love and family.

According to her, professional success should not come at the expense of personal happiness or meaningful relationships with loved ones.

She noted that while work will always demand attention, family and close relationships remain important and should not be neglected.

Her message highlights the importance of taking care of oneself, making time for loved ones and finding the strength to rise again after difficult moments.

Akindele’s candid revelation serves as a reminder that fame and success do not exempt anyone from emotional struggles, and that even people who bring joy to millions may have private battles of their own.
