Gary Neville Calls for Michael Carrick’s Sacking as Man United Crisis Deepens

Neville’s comments came after United suffered a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that intensified pressure on Carrick and left the club 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Despite growing calls for his dismissal, Manchester United’s hierarchy has decided to give Carrick another opportunity to turn the situation around. The 45-year-old is expected to remain in charge for Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Chelsea.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast on Thursday, Neville suggested that United’s decision followed prolonged discussions among club officials, who ultimately opted to keep the manager rather than make an immediate change.

“I reckon what’s happened in the 24 hours after Bournemouth is that they’ve literally debated it back and forth,” Neville said, adding that the club may have become confused by its own deliberations before deciding to retain Carrick.

The former defender questioned whether United had adequately prepared for the possibility of changing managers, suggesting that a lack of suitable alternatives and indecision within the club’s leadership may have influenced the outcome.

Neville also reflected on his own managerial experience at Valencia, where he was dismissed in 2016 after a difficult spell in charge.

“Sometimes a manager needs sacking for their own good. I needed sacking at Valencia. I was happy that they put me out of my misery,” he said.

Carrick’s position has become increasingly difficult following a run of eight matches without a win in all competitions. United’s poor form has also coincided with reports of tensions between the manager and some of his players.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes attracted attention after publicly questioning the team’s tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como last week.

Fernandes was subsequently left on the bench for the Bournemouth match, although he and Carrick have since held discussions aimed at resolving their differences.

Neville interpreted the captain’s public criticism as a possible indication of deeper frustration within the dressing room, suggesting that disagreements behind closed doors could be more extensive than what supporters have seen publicly.

The former United captain also described the reaction of fans following the Bournemouth defeat. Supporters sang Carrick’s name as he applauded them at the final whistle, an incident Neville interpreted as resembling a farewell gesture. The players, however, were booed as they left the pitch.

Despite the criticism, United have opted to give Carrick more time to improve results, beginning with the difficult trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The decision leaves the former midfielder under considerable pressure, with upcoming fixtures expected to play an important role in determining the direction of his tenure.

Neville has also argued that responsibility for United’s struggles should not rest solely with the manager, calling attention to the club’s leadership and the decisions that have shaped its recent football operations.

For now, Carrick remains in charge as Manchester United attempt to halt their poor run and prevent their position in the league table from deteriorating further.
