A yet-to-be-identified man has died in a road accident involving a Mercedes-Benz C300 and a bus along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the Magboro area of Ogun State.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, with preliminary accounts indicating that a trailer driver allegedly caused the collision before fleeing the scene.
According to an eyewitness, the deceased and other members of a football academy were travelling in two vehicles to attend a football match when the incident occurred.
The witness said a trailer suddenly crossed from the opposite side of the road and struck the Mercedes-Benz, causing the car to collide with a bus.
“One person died in the car while the rest of us survived,” the eyewitness said, adding that the occupants of the bus escaped unharmed.
Officials of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) and police officers confirmed the fatal incident at the scene.
The Mercedes-Benz, with registration number SMK-878KX, was badly damaged in the crash, while efforts were reportedly underway to remove its wreckage from the expressway.
The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of reporting.
The suspected trailer driver reportedly fled with the vehicle after the collision, raising concerns over hit-and-run incidents and road safety along the busy highway.
The incident has renewed calls for motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
