The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over an alleged plan to alter the timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, warning that any attempt to manipulate the electoral calendar could undermine the country’s democratic process.
The opposition party cautioned against any move that could disrupt preparations for the forthcoming general election, stressing the importance of a transparent and predictable electoral timetable.
The development comes amid growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties expressing concerns over electoral reforms, the conduct of political activities and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The ADC has repeatedly called on electoral authorities and other relevant institutions to ensure that all political parties are given a fair opportunity to participate in the elections.
The party has also emphasised the need to protect Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, arguing that electoral arrangements should be guided by established laws and constitutional provisions rather than partisan interests.
The controversy over the election timetable adds to existing political disagreements as parties intensify preparations for the contest.
The ADC’s position is that any proposed change to the election schedule should be carefully scrutinised to ensure that it does not compromise democratic standards or create an unfair advantage for any political party.
However, the allegation of a deliberate plot to shift the presidential election remains the party’s claim and should not be treated as an established fact without independent confirmation.
With the 2027 general election approaching, the handling of the electoral timetable is expected to remain a significant issue for political parties, electoral officials and Nigerians concerned about the credibility of the polls.
