The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Niger State, Mohammed Ndarani (SAN), has appointed former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Jonathan Vatsa, as campaign spokesperson and director of mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointment comes amid growing political realignments in the state as parties intensify preparations for the forthcoming governorship contest.
Vatsa recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP, alongside more than 200 supporters, following his resignation from the ruling party after 13 years of membership.
His decision to join the opposition party followed increasing criticism of the APC-led administration in Niger State, particularly over governance, public spending and the delivery of development projects.
Vatsa formally joined the SDP at his Gulu-Anguwa-Gulu Vatsa ward in Lapai Local Government Area, where he received his membership card from the party’s ward chairman, Adamu Mohammed Baba.
Explaining his decision to align with the SDP, the former commissioner expressed confidence in Ndarani’s leadership capacity, describing the governorship candidate as someone capable of providing credible leadership and moving the state forward.
He also urged residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and prepare to participate actively in the 2027 elections.
A boost to SDP’s campaign structure
Vatsa’s appointment is expected to draw on his experience in government, political communication and grassroots mobilisation as the SDP seeks to strengthen its presence across Niger State.
As campaign spokesperson, he is expected to help communicate the candidate’s message, respond to political developments and present the party’s positions to voters.
His mobilisation role will also place emphasis on building support at the grassroots, engaging communities and encouraging voters to identify with the SDP’s campaign.
Vatsa previously served as the APC’s pioneer publicity secretary in Niger State and later held the position of Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism under former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello.
His political experience and established connections in the state could prove valuable to the SDP as it attempts to expand its support base ahead of the elections.
The party will, however, need to translate the growing number of political alliances and defections into sustained voter support across the state.
Niger’s 2027 political battle gathers momentum
The appointment comes at a time when political parties in Niger State are working to consolidate their structures and strengthen their positions ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Vatsa’s departure from the APC, accompanied by more than 200 supporters from the APC and Peoples Democratic Party, represents another development in the changing political landscape.
The former commissioner has been outspoken in his criticism of the state government, alleging that substantial public revenue and borrowing have not produced sufficient results for residents. Those claims remain his political assessment and are disputed matters for public scrutiny.
With Vatsa now taking on campaign responsibilities within the SDP, attention will turn to how effectively the party can use his political experience and grassroots connections to challenge the ruling party.
The 2027 contest is expected to test not only the popularity of the candidates but also their ability to build effective campaign organisations, win public confidence and present convincing plans for the state’s development.
