Nigeria has evacuated a patient diagnosed with Ebola virus disease to Switzerland as the Federal Government steps up efforts to contain the infection and prevent further transmission.

The patient, a 42-year-old Ugandan-born woman married to a Swiss diplomat, was reported as Nigeria’s first confirmed Ebola case on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The evacuation comes amid heightened public health concerns following the confirmation of the case, prompting the government to strengthen surveillance, testing and emergency response measures.

The Federal Government has also released ₦10 billion in emergency funding to support the country’s Ebola containment efforts.

The funds are expected to cover laboratory testing, the procurement of protective equipment, the mobilisation of health workers and other essential measures aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.

Health authorities are expected to intensify monitoring and preparedness activities as Nigeria works to contain the situation and protect the public.

Ebola is a serious infectious disease that can spread through direct contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. Health officials advise the public to maintain good hygiene and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms after a possible exposure.

The government’s response will be crucial in limiting the risk of further infections and ensuring that suspected cases are identified and managed promptly.
