Human rights activist and politician Aisha Yesufu has criticised the conduct of Nigerian men in politics, describing them as cowardly and overly submissive to powerful political figures.
Yesufu made the remarks following Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s declaration that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was the common political leader in the state.
Her comments followed a video circulating on social media in which Fubara addressed supporters, telling those who had previously regarded him as their leader during the political crisis to stop doing so because they now had a common leader.
Yesufu Questions Political Courage
Reacting to the development in a post on X, Yesufu accused male politicians of abandoning their convictions and yielding to influential political figures.
“That is the typical behaviour of Nigerian men in politics. They are quick to grovel, ass-lickers and very cowardly,” she wrote.
The activist contrasted their conduct with that of women in politics, arguing that women were often more willing to stand their ground when confronted with political pressure.
“The women are usually bolder and can stand their ground,” she added, challenging men to demonstrate greater confidence in their political decisions.
Fubara’s Remarks Renew Attention on Rivers Political Crisis
Fubara’s declaration has drawn attention to the changing relationship between the Rivers governor and Wike, his predecessor, following their prolonged political disagreement.
The dispute, which has involved competing political interests and tensions within the state’s political structure, has remained a major subject of public discussion.
Fubara’s latest remarks appear to signal a shift in how he publicly acknowledges Wike’s influence in Rivers politics. However, the development has also prompted reactions from commentators and political observers about political independence, loyalty and the influence of powerful figures over elected officials.
Yesufu’s comments have added another voice to the debate, particularly over whether political leaders should maintain their positions in the face of pressure from influential allies.
