Tragedy struck Owode-Ede in Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State after a two-storey commercial building under construction collapsed, leaving three people dead and five others rescued alive.
The incident occurred at Zone 8, Oke Alaafia Community, at about 11pm on Friday, October 30, triggering an emergency rescue operation involving firefighters, police officers and other security personnel.
The Federal Fire Service, Osun State Command, said it received a distress call at about 11.30pm and immediately deployed its personnel to the scene.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Ojo Omoyemi Olamide, the five survivors were taken to Idera Specialist Hospital in Ede for urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the three deceased victims were handed over to the police.
The collapsed structure was a commercial shopping complex comprising six shops on the upper floor, six shops on the middle floor and two stores on the ground floor.
Preliminary investigations by the fire service suggested that structural defects and the possible use of substandard building materials may have contributed to the collapse. The exact cause, however, remains subject to further investigation.
The rescue operation was conducted in collaboration with the Osun State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The fire service estimated the property loss at approximately ₦100 million, while property worth about ₦150 million was reportedly saved during the operation.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about building safety, construction standards and the enforcement of building regulations in Nigeria, particularly in structures still under construction.
