Rescue teams in Rivers State have intensified efforts to locate missing passengers following a boat collision along the Robertkiri waterways in Kula, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, with eight people reportedly rescued.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a tugboat and a speedboat carrying more than 15 people collided, leaving several passengers feared drowned.
The tugboat was reportedly being operated by security personnel who were attempting to pull an oil vessel with a capacity of 200,000 barrels, operated by Ibeto Group, when the collision occurred.
Following the incident, rescue efforts were launched to locate the missing passengers and establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
As operations continued on Thursday, authorities focused on recovering the bodies of those believed to have drowned, while the rescue of eight passengers offered some relief amid growing concern for those still unaccounted for.
The incident has renewed concerns about passenger safety on waterways in riverine communities, where boats remain an important means of transportation.
Further details, including the confirmed number of missing passengers and the identities of those rescued, are expected as the search operation progresses.
