Nigerian music star Burna Boy has made history at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony after presenting the prestigious Socrates Award to Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka in London.
The Grammy-winning singer presented the honour on Monday night, October 26, at the London Palladium, marking a significant moment for Nigerian entertainment on one of football’s biggest international stages.
Burna Boy became the first Nigerian artiste to present an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, adding another milestone to his growing list of appearances at major global sporting events.
Before announcing the winner, the singer spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, explaining that the initiative was established to support the development of young football talents in his home country.
He expressed hope that the project would one day produce a Nigerian player capable of earning football’s most prestigious individual honour.
“Hopefully, one day I’ll come back here to see one of my people getting an award at the Ballon d’Or,” the singer said.
Why Bukayo Saka Won the Award
Saka received the Socrates Award in recognition of his humanitarian work, particularly his partnership with BigShoe, a charitable organisation that helps children access essential medical treatment.
Through the initiative, the Arsenal forward has helped fund life-changing medical procedures for children in need, including operations to restore sight.
In 2022, Saka supported surgeries for 120 children in Kano, Nigeria. He subsequently contributed to medical interventions for children in Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.
The award recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to support humanitarian causes and improve lives beyond the pitch.
Named after the late Brazilian football legend Sócrates, the award was established in 2022 to celebrate outstanding social and charitable contributions within football.
Previous recipients include Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior and Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso.
Nigerian Entertainment Takes Centre Stage
Burna Boy’s appearance at the ceremony highlights the growing presence of Nigerian artistes at major international sporting events.
His participation also placed Nigeria’s entertainment industry in the spotlight alongside some of the biggest names in world football.
By presenting the award to Saka, the singer celebrated not only the footballer’s charitable contributions but also the importance of using fame and influence to support vulnerable communities.
For Saka, the recognition adds to his achievements beyond football, while Burna Boy’s historic appearance represents another moment of international recognition for Nigerian entertainment.
